I think we are seeing some great value here with Rutgers as a 6.5-point dog against St. John's. The Red Storm have opened up 2-0 and in their only lined game covered as a 5.5-point favorite in a 66-57 win against Wagner. The fact that they were only a 5.5-point favorite against Wagner is says a lot about how the books feel about this team. It's worth noting they were fortunate to cover, as Wager had a 46-45 lead with just under 12 minutes to play and proceeded to score 11 points the rest of the way.
St John's is in for a long-season. The Red Storm lost all 5 starters from last year, as well as a key reserve. They only returned 3 scholarship players and not one of them averaged more than 10 minutes a game.
Rutgers isn't a great team by any means and will likely finish at or near the bottom of the Big Ten, but I have liked what I have seen from the Scarlet Knights early on. They landed a highly touted freshman point guard in Corey Sanders and he's averaging 15 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals early. They also brought in junior college transfer Deshawn Freeman, who is averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks. Overall the Scarlet Knights have 4 players averaging in double-figures.
I think Rutgers has an excellent shot at winning this game outright, making them an easy play for me as a decently sized underdog. The Scarlet Knights also fall into a strong system, as teams off 2 consecutive wins by 10 or more points, with 2 or more returning starters than their opponent are 27-4 (87%) ATS over the last 5 seasons.
