The Boston Bruins opened the season with three straight defeats home at TD Garden but are off two big road wins at Colorado (6-2) and Arizona (5-3). Traditionally a strong home-team we can expect the Bruins to make it three wins in a row when they return home to host the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night.
Here are my keys to the game:
1. Road Woes - The Flyers opened the season with a couple of road losses at Tampa Bay and Florida and have won only 13 of their last 53 away from home. They've lost five straight meetings with the Bruins at TD Garden.
2. The Bruins Power Play - The Bruins converted on three of six chances on the man advantage at Arizona Saturday, the second time this season they've scored three power play goals in the same game. Their 38.9% conversion rate for the season is the best mark in the NHL.
3. X-Factor - Philadelphia has been limited to one goal in three of its last four games. That won't cut it here against a Bruins team that is averaging 3.6 goals per game which is second best only to the Capitals 3.8.

Free Pick on Blue Jays -
As I expected, Toronto's offense came to life in Game 3 at home in a 11-8 win that wasn't as close as the final score would indicate. I look for the Blue Jays to carry over that momentum to Game 4 and tie up the series at 2-2. A big reason for that is the pitching matchup.
Kansas City will give the ball to Chris Young, who will be making his first postseason start of 2015 and first start overall since Oct. 2nd. It's extremely difficult for a starter to keep his form after such a long break, so I'm not all that concerned with his strong numbers coming into this game. Young is also going up against a loaded Blue Jays lineup and I just don't see him being all that effective in this one.
Toronto will counter with R.A. Dickey, who despite only pitching 4 2/3 innings in his only start against the Rangers in the ALDS, was very effective. Dickey held Texas to just 1 run on 5 hits with no walks. Dickey has been rock solid at home with a 3.11 ERA and 1.046 WHIP in 17 starts with Toronto going 12-5 in those outings.
Blue Jays are 41-15 in their last 56 overall as a favorite of -150 or more and 28-8 in their last 36 as a home favorite of -150 to -200. Toronto is also 6-1 in Dickey's last 7 home starts, 7-3 in their last 10 following a win and 38-14 in their last 52 home games vs a right-handed starter. Royals are 1-4 in their last 5 playoff road games and just 2-8 overall in their last 10 road games against a team that's won more than 60% of their home games. Take Toronto!

UNDER 41 Seattle/Carolina (NFL)

I think the books have set the total way too high for Sunday's NFC showdown between the Carolina Panthers and the Seattle Seahawks. I know these two teams combined for 48 points in a 31-17 Seattle win in last year's Divisional Round matchup in the playoffs, but that was a result of a rare 63-yard touchdown pass by Seattle, a interception returned for a touchdown by the Seahawks and a garbage touchdown by Carolina late in the 4th quarter with the game out of reach. Prior to that playoff game, these two teams had faced off in the regular season and combined for 22 points in a 13-9 Seattle win. They also played each other in the regular season in 2013 and 2012. The highest scoring game of the 3 was a 16-12 Seattle win in 2013. I believe the only thing that gets this game over 41 points is a couple of non-offensive touchdowns and I'm willing to gamble that doesn't happen. While the Panthers come into this game ranked a surprising 6th in the league in scoring offense at 27.0 ppg, that a direct result of an extremely easy schedule that has seen them face the Jaguars, Texans, Saints and Buccaneers. Jacksonville is 31st in scoring defense, Houston is 24th, New Orleans is 29th and Tampa Bay is 32nd. Seattle's defense had a lapse in the 4th quarter last week against the Bengals, but that's not going to happen often and Carolina isn't anywhere close to the level as the Bengals offensively. With the Seahawks coming off a crushing loss and desperately needing a win at 2-3 overall, I'm expecting a dominant defensive effort at home in what feels like a must-win game. On the flip side of this, I think the Seahawks are going to have an equally difficult time scoring here against a stingy Carolina defense that ranks 4th in the league, allowing just 17.8 ppg. While that number is also inflated some due to the competition they have faced, they haven't had their best defensive player in linebacker Luke Kuechly since Week 1 against the Jaguars. He's been cleared to return this week against Seattle and that only increases Carolina's chances of slowing down a Seattle offense that is having major issues up front on the offensive line. Another big factor that favors Carolina's defense in this one, is the fact that the Panthers come into this game off their bye. They are not only going to be fresh, but have had two full weeks to study the Seattle offense. Most importantly, devise a gameplan to keep Russell Wilson in the pocket and not let him create big plays with both his arm and legs scrambling. UNDER is 17-8 in the Seahawks last 25 games against an NFC opponent and a perfect 7-0 in their last 7 games off a road loss. UNDER is also 23-6 in Carolina's last 29 off a road win against a division rival and 13-6 in their last 19 after scoring 30+ points in their last contest. Take the UNDER!

Recommendation: Take Michigan State (#173)

This is a fascinating game; a contest where the contrasts between Las Vegas and the mainstream college football world are on full display for everyone to see. The pointspread itself has been a major issue in social media discussion this week, with the Wolverines getting bet up as high as -8.5 before some buyback on the Spartans, driving the line back down to the current -7.5 number as I write this on Thursday morning. Of course, Michigan State is ranked at #4 in the Coaches Poll, while Michigan is #14, giving ill-informed TV commentators the right to call it an ‘upset’ if Michigan wins the game – even if the Wolverines don’t cover the spread.

Last week at this time, the ‘lookahead’ line at the Westgate Superbook here in Vegas for Michigan State – Michigan was sitting at pick ‘em. Then Michigan did what they’ve been doing all year – blowing out foes in bad spots. And Michigan State did what they’ve been doing all year – winning the game but not covering the pointspread in a matchup with Rutgers. And that creates some legitimate market bias here – hence the enormous adjustment to the pointspread.

When a team wins and covers one week, they attract the bettors who supported them the previous week, and bring on some new supporters as well. When a team fails to cover the spread, their supporters get burned and many potential new supporters aren’t quite as interested in backing them. Over a one or two week span, this won’t have a major effect on the pointspread. But when it happens over and over, week after week, the books adjust to the market, not to their own power ratings. And that’s exactly what’s happened here.

The Spartans are the ultimate rarity in sports: 6-0 SU, 0-6 ATS. The Wolverines haven’t been perfect ATS, failing to cover in an opening night loss at Utah and in a 28-7 win over UNLV as 32 point favorites. But Michigan has covered the spread while shutting out their opponent in each of the last three weeks, attracting enormous market support. Last week, against previously unbeaten Northwestern, the Wolverines took a TON of sharp money. The game was over early – Michigan returned the opening kickoff for a TD, forced a three-and-out, then scored another TD. At 14-0, five minutes in, the offensively challenged Wildcats were already beat.

The Wolverines absolutely have this game triple circled on their schedule, a statement game for the home team after getting blown out by the Spartans in each of the last two years (29-6 and 35-11). Jim Harbaugh’s squad has dropped seven of the last eight meetings in a series that they had dominated for the previous three decades. Michigan certainly won’t go into this game with the mentality of a favorite; nor will the Wolverines let up if they have the opportunity to run up the score a little bit.

But Michigan State is the clear choice from a betting perspective, even knowing the risks. Why? Three reasons. First and foremost, this pointspread is ridiculous. Sparty is 0-6 ATS as a favorite this year. Now they’re an underdog. Instead of needing a blowout win to cover the spread – something this year’s Michigan State team isn’t very good at – now even a competitive loss will cash a winning spread bet, and the Spartans don’t lose many games!

Second, Michigan State has the better quarterback, catching more than a touchdown. Connor Cook has an NFL future. Jake Rudock is the guy holding down the fort for Harbaugh until he can recruit the next Andrew Luck or Tom Brady to come to Ann Arbor. Rudock has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns this year. Meanwhile, Connor Cook is in his third year as the starter running the same offense, with a 12-2 TD-INT ratio this year. Advantage: Spartans.

Last, but not least, a good portion of Michigan State’s ATS struggles this year have come in part due to a barrage of key injuries on both sides of the football, most notably on the offensive line and in the secondary. Several of those key pieces are expected back this week, including NFL bound left tackle Jack Conklin and center Jack Allen, shoring up an offensive line that has been a weak link without them. Even if the Wolverines get off the schnied against the Spartans, I’m expecting a competitive ballgame. Take Michigan State.

BOISE STATE -9 (CFB)

The Broncos have really been impressive since true freshman quarterback Brett Rypien took over for the injured Ryan Finley and it’s safe to say that Finley won’t be getting his job back when he’s healthy. Rypien has taken this Boise State offense to a whole different level, as he has thrown for 1,057 yards with 7 touchdowns and just 1 interceptions in 3 full starts and limited action in relief against Idaho State. He’s completed 70.2% of his attempts with an impressive 10.2 yards/attempt. In his 3 starts the Broncos have scored 56, 55 and 41 points, while outscoring their opponents in this stretch by 128 points. I know Utah State comes into this game ranked 17th in the country in total defense, allowing just 397.4 ypg, but I don’t think they are strong as the numbers would suggest. They held Utah to 24 points on the road in a big cover as a 11.5-point dog on Friday night back in Week 2 of the season, but the Utes lost starting quarterback Travis Wilson in the second quarter. Utah State still gave up 195 yards on the ground in that one and were fortunate to cover the spread. The most telling game for me, was against Washington, where they allowed Huskies true freshman quarterback Jake Browning to complete 22 of 31 for 368 yards and 3 scores. Boise State is a much better offensive team than Washington and I look for Rypien to pick apart the Aggies secondary. Utah State has scored 33 and 56 points in their last two games, but they came against a couple of poor defensive teams in Colorado State and Fresno State. They only managed 14 points against Utah and just 17 against Washington. This is also a team that beat Southern Utah at home just 12-9 and needed a 42-yard punt return touchdown for the game-winning score. Boise State could very easily be 6-0 and ranked much higher than they are. The Broncos were very unfortunate in their loss to BYU. Leading 28-24, Boise State allowed a 35-yard touchdown pass on 4th and 7 with just 45 seconds left in regulation. Keep in mind that was also before Rypien took over at quarterback and the offense wasn’t producing at the level it is now. I just don’t see the Aggies being able to make enough stops and score enough points to keep this one close. I’ve talked a lot about the Boise State offense, but their defense has also been exceptional. The Broncos come in ranked 5th in the country in total defense, allowing just 249.5 ypg. The same Washington team that put up 31 points and 442 yards against Utah State, only managed 13 points and 179 yards against the Broncos. Underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points that are off 2 straight conference wins against an opponent that is off a double-digit road win are just 11-42 (21%) ATS over the last 10 seasons. Take Boise State!

Jack's Free Pick Friday: Cincinnati +7

I believe the Cincinnati Bearcats are one of the most underrated teams in college football. I have backed them with success in each of their last two games against some very good opponents. They only lost 46-53 to Memphis as 7.5-point road underdogs in a game they led most of the way. They then came back and upset Miami 34-23 at home as 7.5-point dogs.

All you need to look at is the numbers the Bearcats are putting up to realize that they are a very good team. Their offense is averaging 587.2 yards per game and 6.8 per play against opposing defenses that allow 446 yards per game and 5.9 per play. Their defense is allowing 397.4 yards per game, so they are outgaining teams by roughly 190 yards per game. That’s the sign of a great team, but the Bearcats’ mediocre 3-2 record has them under the radar right now.

There are questions at the quarterback position for both teams. Gunnier Kiel is expected to be available after suffering a head injury a few weeks ago for Cincinnati, but with the way freshman Hayden Moore has been playing, it would be insane of head coach Tommy Tuberville not to go with Moore. BYU QB Tanner Mangum suffered a hamstring injury last game, but he is probable to play in this game. He is their second-stringer as Taysom Hill is already out with injury, so the Cougars are in much worse shape at QB with a hobbled Mangum.

Moore has simply been dominant this season, throwing for 1,061 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions while averaging 9.3 yards per attempt in limited action. He threw for 557 yards and four touchdowns in the loss to Memphis in only three quarters, and he threw for 279 yards with two touchdowns in the win over Miami. The Bearcats certainly have a bright future with him at the helm. Tuberville has stated it will be a game-time decision on his starting QB.

But perhaps the biggest reason to take the Bearcats this week is because they are going to be the more rested team. They last played on October 1, so they will have had 14 days in between games. Meanwhile, BYU has to be gassed as it will be working on a short week having last played on October 10. The Cougars haven’t had a bye week all season, and they’ve played one of the toughest schedules in the country with Nebraska, Boise, UCLA, Michigan, UConn and ECU. There’s not one bad team in that bunch. They desperately need a break, but they won’t be getting one against this up-tempo, high-powered Cincinnati offense.

The Bearcats are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS win and 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine games following a S.U. win. The Cougars are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games following an ATS loss. Cincinnati is 1-4 ATS in its last five vs. American Athletic opponents. Bet Cincinnati Friday.

There's been plenty made about Kershaw's postseason struggles, but he pitched good enough to win Game 1 and I expect him to deliver a big time performance with the Dodgers facing elimination. Kershaw allowed 3 runs on just 4 hits in 6 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts in Game 1 and now has a 1.61 ERA and 1.060 WHIP over 10 career starts against the Mets.

Matz will be making his postseason debut and first start since 9/24. He went 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA in 6 starts during the regular season. While he only took the mound twice at home, he posted a sensational 1.98 ERA and 1.170 WHIP in 13 2/3 innings. It's also worth noting that Matz faced the Dodgers back on 7/5 and held LA to just 2 hits over 6 scoreless innings.

UNDER is 23-10 in the Dodgers last 33 road games against a team with a winning record, 12-4 in Kershaw's last 16 starts following a team loss and 8-2 in their last 10 after scoring 5 or more runs. UNDER 50 NC State/Virginia Tech (CFB)

I look for this game to fall under the total on Friday night. Both of these squads dropped their ACC opener. NC State took a loss by Louisville 20-13 while the Hokies dropped one to Pitt 17-13. There’s a chance senior QB Michael Brewer could return for the Hokies. This would be a big boost for VA Tech but you can’t expect him to light it up if he does return. Both of these offenses struggled last week. NC State only had 11 first downs last week with 228 total yards of offense. The Hokies had just 100 yards of total offense vs Pitt. The good news for these teams is the defenses have been solid. NC State is giving up just under 14 points per game this season and I expect the Hokies run defense to slow down the Wolfpack. Take the UNDER!

New York sends Masahiro Tanaka to the mound. The right-hander has been tagged for a 1.75 HRs per 9 IP mark at home this season and has allowed more than one HR per start, overall. Houston, who relies so much on the long ball, has averaged 7.3 rpg against starting pitchers who allow at least one HR per start, going 10-1 to the Over. The Yankees should provide some offense, also, owning MLB's 5th highest OBP against southpaws. And finally, these two teams, ranked 2nd (Houston) and 4th (Yankees) in HRs hit this season, combining to hit 442 home runs in 2015. The Key: The Buffalo Bills are overvalued this week due to blowing out the Miami Dolphins 41-14 last week. But they gave up 392 total yards to the Dolphins and this game was a bigger blowout than the final score would indicate since the Dolphins finished -3 in turnover differential. The Giants are a better team than their 1-2 record shows. They could easily be 3-0 if not for two blown double-digit fourth quarter leads to the Cowboys and Falcons. They only lost 26-27 at Dallas, and that was a Cowboys team playing with a healthy Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. Speaking of health, the Bills are not in good shape in that department. LeSean McCoy is expected to miss Sunday with a hamstring injury, S Aaoron Williams is out, and WR Sammy Watkins is out as well. The Bills have pretty much lost all their firepower offensively without McCoy and Watkins, and it's going to be very tough to put away the Giants by 6-plus points to cover this spread as a result. Buffalo is 9-25 ATS in its last 34 games following a win by 10 points or more against a division opponent. The Giants are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 road games vs. AFC East opponents. Take New York.
